Ilisin Harvest Festival of the Amis Tribe

The Amis People of Taiwan celebrate “Ilisin” once a year. Like our New Year it is an event that marks the end of one year and the beginning of the next, however, unlike Western New Year, it takes place during the mid-to-late summer. The Hualien County Government holds one Joint Aboriginal Harvest Festival every July where tourists and those curious about Amis tradition have the unique opportunity to observe and experience first-hand an “Ilisin”.

The Dajia Mazu Pilgrimage is a multi-day pilgrimage in which an effigy of Mazu, Taiwan’s most important sea goddess and female deity, is carried by believers throughout Western Taiwan visiting various temples along the way. One of the largest religious events in the world, the celebration was identified as one of the world's three major religious festivals by the Discovery Channel. Anyone is welcome to join the pilgrimage, and supporters often provide refreshments and snacks for free to those marching as they pass by.

The 2023 Taiwan International Festival of Arts will host performing artists from Taiwan, France, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, the United States, South Korea, and Australia, among other countries for a total of 129 performances of 19 productions.

These year’s works will center on the themes of fake news, gender awareness, and conflict among other social issues. The festival will also feature a reprisal performance of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre’s “Legacy”, with the collaboration having special significance for being the 50th anniversary of Cloud Gate’s founding.
